| Well, my first week of class is over. All in all things went well. In MSU news, I went to "The Drill" on Monday and also purchased my season tickets. In fact, season tickets sales for State football this year have surpassed last year's sales--though I'm not really sure why. And the freshman place-kicker who was supposed to sure-up the kicking game broke his foot or leg in practice and is out for the season I think...so more terrible field goal kicking is to be expected. More news later. | | |
| I can vaguely remember my oldest brother's move to State; I was 9 at the time. But my next two brothers' moves I remember more vividly. When Josh moved in, I remember thinking, "In 6 years that will be me." And then when it was Peter's turn, "3 mores years" was the thought. The first vivid memory I have of Mississippi State was the 1998 Arkansas at MSU football game. A Scott Westerfield (I think) fieldgoal late in the game won the game in the waning minutes. The fans stormed the field, as the win all but clinched a SEC West title for the Bullies. Since then, football has been downhill. All this to say that I have been around MSU for years now, and I have been looking foward to this day for some time, years even. And now it's here. With the great help of Dad and Mom, we got everything moved in and the furniture shifted around to make it much more spacious and nice. So, Mom and Dad on the day after their 31st anniversay, have sent their youngest son off to college. For the first time in 27.5 years, with the sole exception of a few days, maybe weeks here or here, they are back on their own. No children to take to school or cook dinner for, or have at home. Mom, I hope you didn't cry too much on the way home! Not too much planned for this week: order textbooks, get settled in, and take it easy. Probably some reading of The White Whale, and earlier I was watching one of my favorites (and your's too, Dad!), The Green Mile on cable, football in the backround at the moment, and, I think, some Seinfeld later tonight with some friends. That's all for now. | | |
| "We are not living in a world where all roads are radii of a circle and where all, if followed long enough, will therefore draw gradually nearer and finally meet at the centre: rather in a world where every road, after a few miles, forks into two, and each of those into two again, and at each fork you must make a decision....I do not think all who choose wrong roads perish; but their rescue consists in being put back on the right road. A sum can be put right: but only by going back till you find the error and working it afresh from that point, never by simply going on....If we insist on keeping Hell (or even Earth) we shall not see Heaven: if we accept Heaven we shall not be able to retain even the smallest and most intimate souvenirs of Hell." --C. S. Lewis in The Great Divorce | | |
| 103 was the high today in Jackson, and in the heat of the day it felt like 112! They are predicting 100+ temperatures for the next FIVE days! Right now, at 6.40 pm it is still 102. I hope you are enjoying Germany, Josh. | | |
| Well, I did my civic duty yesterday and voted in the Republican primary. But, overall, I am sorry to say, very few people were qualified for the offices for which they are running. In one district, three Republicans were running for a justice position, but none of them had any, not any!, legal training. Not a law degree, not legal experience, much less judging experience. I might as well have run. Ah! the joys of American democracy, where one dufus after another runs the government. | | |
